A little bit of history
The Güell wineries are the set of three modernist buildings where, from 1872, Eusebi Güell began producing wine for the ships of the Transatlantic Company bound for Cuba. Güell had acquired the old farmhouse of the Garraf that, until that moment, was Patrimony of the State.
Antonio Gaudí did one of his best works on this estate. He built a building destined for the cellar and another as a dwelling for the porter.
The buildings that complete the terrain
These beautiful wineries are composed of a farmhouse, a wine cellar, a residence for the porter, a chapel and several areas with beautiful gardens.
The medieval farmhouse called “Can Güell” is located between the road and the defense tower of the time. The access door to the building faces the sea and has had numerous modifications over the years. In the beginning, the farm had only one building and a lot of land, when it belonged to the state, until, Eusebi Güell acquired it.
When they changed owners, they decided to build in order to create beautiful wineries in front of the Mediterranean Sea and the Garraf Massif. For this, they had the great artist Antoni Gaudí and his assistant, Francesc Berenguer i Mestres.
The two artists built two new buildings. The first, of stone and brick, was chosen for the porter’s house, designed for the security of the cellar and the land. It was built with an iron gate and attached to a staircase that goes up to the watchtower.
The winery of this estate, joined to the old medieval cottage by two parabolic bridges, is one of the best and most fascinating works of Gaudí. Completely built of stone, it has chimneys and a surprising triangular profile. Inside the building there are 3 floors above the basement cellar; A garage, another for the home of the administrator and the superior as Chapel-lookout. This one is open on one side to a terrace overlooking the sea.
