The Park Güell of Barcelona: an amazing artistic work.

One of the most emblematic areas of Barcelona is the Park Güell. The work of the great Antonio Gaudí is a must see for the tourists of the city seduced by the aesthetics and modernist spirit that permeates other works of this architect, as popular as the Sagrada Familia or La Pedrera.

The history

The Park Güell was inaugurated in 1922, after the wealthy businessman Eusebi Güell commissioned a luxury residential complex from Gaudí. The passage of time and various economic problems caused the initial project to be set aside and become the park we all know today.

Since 1984, the Park Güell is a World Heritage Site thanks to the declaration of UNESCO.

More than a park

The Park Güell is not only a garden. Its combination of architectural elements, nature, mosaics and unique shapes make it a story-telling scenario that surprises its visitors with its magical atmosphere.

The large size of the park, over 17 hectares, offers places of great beauty and relaxation in which to be lost for hours. Gaudí created unique environments full of imagination, in which the columns are transformed into trees and animals. Geometric shapes and colored ceramic mosaics are the protagonists of most spaces.

Gaudí is the representative of the genuine Catalan Modernism, which is reflected in the Park Güell. The combination of colors, shapes and ornaments present throughout the venue breaks with all the most classic schemes and offers symbolic meanings of high level.

The square of the Nature

The center of the park – and undoubtedly one of its most photographed places – is the “Plaza de la Naturaleza”. Surrounded by a huge bank of more than 100 meters in length and snake-shaped decorated with omnipresent colorful mosaics, it also offers breathtaking views of the city, thanks to its privileged location.

Fairy tale entrance

The main entrance to the park is located on Calle Olot, and shows you a fairytale scenario as soon as you enter through the door.

Two small houses with dreamlike architectural elements and the large ceramic dragon that presides over the main stairs giving access to the upper part of the enclosure. The plants and flowers on both sides frame it, giving the touch of color necessary for an idyllic setting.

The top part

The park is located in the highest area of Barcelona and has a 60 meter slope, which the architect used to pose as a symbolic path of spiritual elevation. Although at first thought of putting in the top a chapel, finally was placed a Monument to the Calvary in form of three crosses that crowns the most unknown part of the enclosure for many tourists. Going up there implies a walk between an area full of nature and beauty.

A final tip? If you get to the highest point of the mountain, take advantage to enjoy the extraordinary views over the city. A truly privileged setting!
