It is important to know that the history of the museums of Sitges is closely linked to the collection of the painter and writer Santiago Rusiñol.

Cau Ferrat Museum :

The museum, founded in 1893 by the artist Santiago Rusiñol, was initially a house and workshop. It then became a museum from 1933. Today, it contains a collection of paintings, ceramics, sculpture and drawings of Rusiñol, Picasso, Mas i Fontdevila, Zuloaga and many others. Thanks to the work of Rusiñol and other artists, Sitges has become the centre of the modernist movement.

Maricel Museum:

This museum now occupies the space that was before the former residence of Charles Deering, an American collector and philanthropist.Miquel Utrillo, an engineer, painter, decorator and Spanish artistic promoter, was in charge of the building’s architecture. Utrillo converted an hospital into a private residence. In addition to this, Deering bought some fishermen’s houses in Sant Joan and Fonollar Street to be able to put his personal collection. Today you will find works of Jesus Pérez-Rosales and of course other modernist artists. These works were acquired thanks to the “Consorci del Patrimoni de Sitges” in 2012 and to donations. During the visit, you will discover old furniture, ceramic works and works from the still life movement, romanticism, realism and many other artistic movements. The Maricel Museum is full of treasures! Come and discover them with friends or with family during your stay in Sitges.

Romantic Museum :

The building, of neoclassical movement, was built in 1793. The Llopis family, owner of the building, become one of the most influential families in Sitges. Indeed, the Llopis family was composed of wine merchants, lawyers, historians and diplomats. The last heir of the family, the diplomat Manuel Llopis Casades, decided to donate the house to the Generalitat de Catalunya in order to be converted into a museum. The civil war (1936-1939) unfortunately delayed the conversion of the house. Proceedings restarted from 1943 to 1946. Three years later, the ground floor, garden, wine cellar and library were opened to the general public. Thus, today, you will find paintings of Pau Rigalt and doll collections of Lola Anglada since 1961.

Palau Maricel :

It is one of the most emblematic monument in Sitges. Also known as Maricel de Terra to distinguish it from the Museum, the palace is to be visited with friends or family! It is composed of: Saló d’Or, Saló Blau, Sala Capella, Sala Vaixells, terraces or cloisters where you can enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea. Today, the Palace fulfils 3 functions. First of all, institutional and cultural events are organised there, such as concerts, conferences or presentations. On the other hand, some spaces are adapted to company events. Finally, the rooms, the terrace and the cloister are accessible for guided tours organised every Sunday.
